My Nontoxic Hair Routine

My Hair journey

I have naturally curly hair that needs moisture and loves conditioner. Occasionally, my mom would perm my hair as a child, but in middle school, I did the "big chop". After cutting off most of my hair, it took "forever" to grow. When I finally had some length, I regularly straightened my hair with a flat iron. My hair became damaged and dry, and my curls were barely there.
Just before my clean beauty journey in 2017, I started to become a little more conscious of what I was using on my hair. With lots of trial and error, I have found the products and routine that work for me. I don't follow a trendy or popular method for my hair. I don't let anyone else touch or do my hair. I listen to my hair and give it what it needs when it needs it. I even trim my own hair if I see fit. After just over 4 years of consciously caring for my hair, it is now the longest it has ever been, it's healthy, and my curls are thriving.

My Favorite Hair Products

I started my clean hair journey strictly using SheaMoisture products. After finding out that many of their products contain undisclosed fragrances, I started trying out other brands. I was hesitant to try Beautycounter's shampoo and conditioner because of my specific hair texture and style. I was surprised that their conditioner worked so well for co-washing. Innersense Organic Beauty has become my favorite brand for hair styling products. Plant Therapy recently came out with a detangler, and it completed my collection of hair products.
My Collection:
  • Beautycounter's Daily Shampoo, Daily Conditioner, and Lotus Glow Balm
  • Plant Therapy's Conditioning Detangler Spray
  • SheaMoisture's Curl Primer
  • Innersense Organic Beauty's Leave-in Conditioner, Whipped Texturizer, and Finish Spray.

My Hair Routine

My hair routine consists of 4 basic steps: Wash, Prep, Style, Finish.
1. Wash
  • Shampoo roots before conditioner, every other week.
  • Co-wash with conditioner every 5 days. Comb through and let it sit for 5 minutes before rinsing.
2. Prep
  • Spray detangler all over and gently comb through with a wide-tooth comb.
  • Apply curl primer thoroughly and comb through.
3. Style
  • Spray leave-in conditioner generously throughout sections of hair and scrunch.
  • Scrunch in texturizer to define and hold
4. Finish
  • Once curls are dry, use Lotus Glow Balm to tame any flyaways, smooth frizz, and fix my part.
  • Apply finish spray to set and fight humidity.
