Tips for Maskne

What is Maskne?

"Maskne" is what it sounds like.  It's acne related to wearing a face mask or covering. Wearing a mask or facial covering can trap a lot of heat and moisture. Mask-wearing can lead to breakouts, clogged pores, and skin irritation. Along with maskne, some of you may be dealing with allergic contact dermatitis. This is basically an allergic reaction to a chemical that may be in the mask that you're wearing. With all of the recent mask-wearing, I have dealt with both maskne and allergic contact dermatitis.

How to Prevent Maskne

1. WASH YOUR FACE:  You should cleanse your face before and after wearing a mask. Depending on your skin type, use a targeted cleanser or a gentle cleanser
  • for acne-prone or oily skin: Countercontrol Clear Pore Cleanser or Charcoal Cleansing Bar
  • for irritated skin: Countermatch Foaming Cleanser or Counterstart Cleanser
2. WASH YOUR MASK: Your reusable masks should be washed after every single use. Your masks can trap dirt, oils, and environmental debris. *tip: wash your mask separately from the rest of your laundry. Since masks are relatively small, it's easy to simply wash a mask by hand in the sink.
  • Charcoal Cleansing Bar
3. PROTECT YOUR SKIN: Moisturizers hydrate and provide a protective barrier between your skin and its environment.
  • oil-free moisturizer: Countercontrol Matte Cream
  • lightweight moisturizer: Countermatch Adaptive Moisturizer
4. MINIMIZE MAKEUP USE: Let your skin breathe and stick to eye makeup. If you feel the need to wear face makeup, choose a lightweight tinted moisturizer like Dew Skin.

How to treat maskne

USE TARGETED TREATMENTS:
  • Charcoal Facial Mask: Use twice a week to detox your pores, exfoliate, and absorb excess oils.
  • Overnight Resurfacing Peel: Use 2-3x a week to exfoliate while targeting skin texture and acne scarring.
  • All-Over Acne Treatment: Works to gently clear and prevent breakouts.
  • SOS Spot Treatment: Quickly treats those pesky pimples.
  • Cleansing Balm: Soothes any dry or irritated spots. It also works well as an overnight hydration mask.
  • Balancing Facial Oil: Hydrates, soothes, and restores balance.
Try not to pick at your face. The less you touch your face outside of your skincare routine, the less irritated it will be.
3 things to remember: cleanse, treat, & protect
